Supporting Sustainability Practitioners

Sustainability practitioners work across a broad spectrum of roles. They are engaged in roles that may include:

  • educators
  • project managers
  • facilitators
  • mentors
  • campaigners, and
  • researchers.

Sustainability practitioners utilise a suite of tools to create change. They include:

  • public policy
  • regulation
  • incentives
  • education
  • infrastructure
  • research, and
  • monitoring and reporting.

Sustainability practitioners are engaged in the process of learning and of participatory enquiry. Through actively engaging stakeholders to create a shared vision, sustainability practitioners aim to influence practices and actions to progress sustainability in local communities.

Education for Sustainability (EfS) has a key role to play in achieving sustainability outcomes. It empowers individuals and organisations to reflect on current practice, identify opportunities for change, and take action. As a learning based approach, EfS supports the change process to sustainability.

Education for Sustainability motivates, equips and involves everyone in creating a more sustainable world by working beyond boundaries to create systemic change. It is this process of change that is central to sustainability practice. As an approach that supports the change process, EfS extends far beyond the formal education sector to capture activities that engage people in a range of sectors and settings that are working towards creating the sustainable future they desire.
