About the EfS Capabilities Framework

The Education for Sustainability (EfS) Professional Learning Hub is built around the Education for Sustainability Capabilities Framework. The EfS Capabilities Framework describes the core capabilities for sustainability practitioners who effectively use education to achieve sustainability outcomes.
The EfS Capabilities Framework consists of the three broad learning categories (represented by the blue circles in the diagram):

  • Basic understanding
  • Design, delivery and evaluation and support
  • Partnerships and commitment.

Each learning category includes a number of specific learning areas (represented by the beige circles in the diagram) that unpack the meaning of the categories in more detail.

This EfS Capabilities Framework was developed by leaders in the field of Education for Sustainability after conducting extensive research and consultation with practitioners and industry professionals. The research identified a strong need for ongoing professional development support and demand based professional learning within the fields covered by the EfS Capabilities Framework.

How the Hub uses the Capabilities Framework

All resources in the Hub are catalogued according to the learning categories and learning areas in the EfS Capabilities Framework. This makes it easy to navigate around the Hub and match your learning needs with helpful resources and professional learning services.

The Hub self assessment tool and the resulting professional learning profile are driven and shaped by the EfS Capabilities Framework. The self assessment tool is comprised of a set of questions based on the learning categories and learning areas. Based on responses to these questions, a professional learning profile based on the EfS Capabilities Framework is generated. This professional learning profile identifies individual priority learning areas within each of the three learning categories.
