Personal case study: Jacko Higgins: park ranger, Wurringeridi state park



Purpose of position Jacko Higgins is a park ranger.

Jacko is a park ranger. He manages many areas of work at the Wurringeridi National Park and supervises staff and volunteers.

 

Responsibilities

He has many responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • organising and running guided tours and promoting
  • understanding and appreciation of the natural and cultural features of the park
  • patrolling waterways, roads and tracks to observe and report on the park environment
  • supporting local communities to protect their cultural heritage and develop sustainable land management practices
  • conducting research into the protection and recording of Aboriginal and historic sites and endangered animals and plants
  • supervising and training park staff and volunteers and
  • preparing, evaluating and implementing submissions, management plans, proposals and environmental impact assessments.

Goals in this position 

Jacko is well known in the local community for organising fundraising events for the Park and for encouraging local community involvement. He aims to create lasting volunteer commitment and ongoing education programs with local schools and community organisations.

Jacko also hopes to raise substantial funds for developing the parks eco-visitor program and facilities.

 



Skills and knowledge

Jacko has a Bachelor of Science. Other skills and knowledge that help him in this position include:

  • ability to make accurate observations and recordings
  • good communication skills
  • ability to organise and supervise work
  • ability to handle animals with confidence and patience
  • a good knowledge of land management and conservation practices.
